Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap – Week of 3/8-3/13
Tuesday – 3/9 @ Madison Academy
Varsity – Grissom 10, Madison Academy 3
Grissom hitters remained hot on Tuesday as they brought across 10 runs on 11 hits. Martin Methodist signee Cannon Raby led hitters with 3 hits and 1 RBI while Snead State signee Noah Lam, Sophomore Chris Lynam, and Senior Bryson Santiago drove in 2 RBIs each.
Pitching was stout once again as the Wallace State signee John Allen Stogner worked 5 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit, 0 BBs, and 9 strikeouts. Junior Rynzo Crutcher allowed the only runs of the game for the Mustangs, but still picked up 2 Ks in his 1 inning of work, followed by uncommitted Senior Evan Steckmesser striking out the side in the 7th. Tigers’ pitchers finished the afternoon with 14 strikeouts.
JV
– Grissom 4, Madison Academy 0
The Tigers JV picked up a big road win over Madison Academy on Tuesday despite registering only 1 hit. Pitching was the overall deciding factor in the matchup with the Mustangs as Sophomore leftie Blake Moon picked up the Win in a complete game shutout, striking out a season-high 13.
Thursday – 3/11 vs. New Hope
Varsity – Grissom 16, New Hope 3
After the solid hitting performance on Tuesday, the Tigers followed that up with 16 more runs on 11 hits in the decisive 16-3 win over New Hope in 5 innings. Junior Jack Carson led all hitters with 4 RBIs on 2 hits. Junior Gage Harmon added 3 more RBIs of his own, as Cannon Raby and Chris Lynam both drove in 2.
Wallace State signee Will Varmette worked 2 shutout innings allowing just 1 hit and striking out 4 with Senior Landon Wissman and Junior Logan Davis working the final 3 innings allowing only 2 hits.
JV
– Grissom 3, New Hope 2
After 2 early runs for New Hope JV, the Tigers were able to bounce back with 2 of their own in the 1st off of an RBI single from Ian Lee and a wild pitch, followed by a bases loaded walk to Zach Shipp which brought across the go-ahead run in the 3rd. Despite 2 unearned runs in the 1st, starting pitcher Garrett Blacklock allowed just 1 hit in 4 innings of work. Charlie Cassingham picked up the Save striking out the side in the 5th inning to capture to 3-2 victory.
Saturday – 3/13 vs. Hoover (@ Toyota Field)
Varsity – Grissom 0, Hoover 5
The early morning matchup against the Hoover Bucs featured a pitching duel that saw only 6 combined hits and 5 total runs. The most noticeable difference in the game proved to be the 8 BBs by Grissom pitchers. Starting pitcher, Troy signee Dillon Cook, picked up the only hit of the day for the Tigers, while also allowing only 1 run and striking out 3 in 3.1 innings of work.
Saturday – 3/13 vs. James Clemens (@ Toyota Field)
Varsity – Grissom 5, James Clemens 4
After another slow start at the plate against the Jets, Junior Jack Carson picked up a huge 2-out RBI in the bottom half of the 5th to give Grissom a 3-2 lead. Once James Clemens took back the lead 4-3 in the 6th, another 2-out RBI, this time off the bat of Dillon Cook, drove in the tying and go ahead runs as the Tigers completed the comeback.
Evan Steckmesser picked up a No Decision as he worked 4 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5. The pair of Wallace State signees Will Varmette and John Allen Stogner came in out of the pen to help the Tigers pick up the win as they combined to allow only 1 hit and strike out 4.
