Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap – Week of 2/8-2/13
Friday – 2/12 @ #8 Bob Jones
Varsity
– Grissom 1, Bob Jones 2
The Patriots put up 2 early runs in the bottom half of the first following a leadoff walk and a costly error. A safety squeeze executed by catcher Tyler Sanderson in the top half of the 5th inning led to the only run of the evening scored by the Tigers. The pitching was strong on both sides, as we opened the 2021 season. Bob Jones pitchers struck out 6, while Grissom sat down 9. John Allen Stogner suffered his first loss of the season, despite giving up only 1ER on 1 hit, striking out 3 in 2.1 innings on the mound. Senior Evan Steckmesser and Junior Rynzo Crutcher looked solid in relief as they combined for the final 3.2 innings allowing only 2 hits and striking out 6.
JV
– Grissom 3, Bob Jones 13
Sophomore Hayden Mai got the start for Grissom and pitched a solid 2 innings, allowing 0ER and only 1 hit, striking out 5. Grissom got down to an early 3-run deficit before cutting the Bob Jones lead to 3-2 entering the bottom half of the 4th inning. The Patriots answered with 10 more runs over the final 2 innings, giving the Tigers a 13-3 loss in their season opener.
Saturday – 2/13 vs Buckhorn
Varsity – Grissom 1, Buckhorn 0
Another tough pitching battle ensued on this Saturday morning as the Buckhorn Bucks traveled to Grissom. Grissom Starting Pitcher Will Varmette had a stellar outing to start his Senior campaign. The Wallace State signee finished the day with 4 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 5. Senior Landon Wissman worked a scoreless 5th inning, while the Junior Rynzo Crutcher captured the first Tiger’s W of the season with his 2 scoreless innings at the back end, striking out 4 of the 6 batters that he retired.
Junior Christian Sutphin led all Grissom hitters with 2 hits, while Eli Kelly and Cannon Raby had the other hits for the Tigers. Even with the solid pitching from both sides, it was a 2 out error by the Buckhorn right fielder in the bottom of the 7th that brought across the game-winning run for the Grissom Tigers.
Saturday – 2/13 vs Madison County
JV
– Grissom 13, Madison County 0
The Tigers JV was able to bounce back against Madison County in their second game of the season as 4 different pitchers combined for a 1 hit shutout. Garrett Blacklock, Charlie Cassingham, Ian Lee, and Rylan McCreery combined to allow only 1 hit, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts through their 5 innings of work.
Charlie Cassingham led all hitters with 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 stolen bases, and 4 RBIs. Cam Hearn added 2 more hits as the team combined for 9 hits in their bounce back victory to get into the win column.
