Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap – Week of 3/1-3/6
Monday – 3/1 vs. Hazel Green
Varsity – Grissom 10, Hazel Green 0
We saw yet another shut down pitching performance for the Tigers on Monday as Wallace State signee John Allen Stogner pitched a complete game, 3 hit shutout with 0 BBs and 9 Ks. Junior Jack Carson led all hitters with 2 hits and 2 RBIs while 6 other Tigers all finished with at least 1 RBI on the night.
JV
– Grissom 13, Hazel Green 1
The Tigers JV got the bats going early on Monday as they scored 3 in the 1st, followed by 10 more over the next 4 innings to complete their 13-1 victory over the Trojans. Charlie Cassingham and Rylan McCreery both finished the day with 2 RBIs and 2 Stolen Bases. Sophomore Garrett Swearingen picked up the Win as he worked 3 innings, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4.
Wednesday – 3/3 vs. Sparkman
JV – Grissom 3, Sparkman 0
A 1st inning RBI Double from Gage Harmon proved to be enough for the Grissom JV in Game 1 on Wednesday as the Tigers took home a 3-0 win. Charlie Cassingham led the team with 2 more hits in the game, while Harmon drove in 2 of the 3 Tiger runs. Sophomore Trent Wagoner picked up the victory on the mound as he allowed only 2 hits in 4 innings of work, striking out 7.
JV
– Grissom 8, Sparkman 2
Following 2 first inning runs from the Sparkman JV, the Tigers were able to bounce back and score 8 unanswered runs to defeat the Senators 8-2 in Game 2 of the Wednesday doubleheader. Charlie Cassingham and Ian Lee both picked up the only RBIs in the game for Grissom, while Cassingham also added 3 more Stolen Bases adding to his team lead. Sophomore Blake Moon hit his stride after the 1st inning struggles, finishing the day with the Complete Game Win, striking out 10 over his 5 innings of work.
Thursday – 3/4 vs. Scottsboro
Varsity – Grissom 4, Scottsboro 5
Thursday’s matchup with Scottsboro marked the first time in weeks that we saw Grissom hitters hit a cold streak at the plate as the team finished with only 4 hits on the afternoon. Junior Jack Carson drove in the only RBI of the game for Grissom as their winning streak came to a close. Wallace State signee Will Varmette suffered his first loss of the season as he gave up 5 runs in his 3.2 innings of work, while striking out 5.
One of the lone bright spots on the day for the Tigers was Junior Rynzo Crutcher continuing his dominance out of the bullpen as he worked the final 3.1 innings, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 7. Crutcher is among the team leaders in pitching with his 0.00 ERA and 23 Ks through 10.1 innings of work this season.
JV
– Grissom 2, Scottsboro 5
The Scottsboro JV found a way to complete the Thursday sweep at Grissom as Tigers hitters struggled all afternoon. Grissom JV hitters finished the day with only 2 hits and 8 strikeouts. Cameron Hearn picked up the only RBI of the game for the Tigers as they fell 5-2. Sophomore Hayden Mai took the loss, although he gave up only 1 earned run through his 4 innings of work, striking out 6.
Friday – 3/5 vs. North Jackson
Varsity – Grissom 10, North Jackson 0
It did not take long for the Tigers to bounce back following their second loss of the season as they scored 8 runs in the first two innings. Sophomore Chris Lynam added to his RBI total as he drove in 4. Tyler Sanderson and Christian Sutphin added 2 more RBIs of their own as Grissom was able to knock off a good North Jackson team in just 5 innings.
Uncommitted Senior Evan Steckmesser had another stellar outing in the Tigers win. Steckmesser picked up the Win working 4 innings, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 6. Senior Jack Bianca worked a scoreless 5th inning striking out 2 of the 3 batters that he faced.
Saturday – 3/6 vs. Austin
Varsity – Grissom 17, Austin 3
After a 4-run 1st inning, the Tigers followed with an 11-run 2nd inning to carry a 15-0 lead into the 3rd inning of their contest with Austin. Tyler Sanderson(3), Christian Sutphin(3), Gage Harmon(2), and Chris Lynam(2) all combined for 10 RBIs on Saturday as Grissom finished the day with 17 runs on 10 hits.
Pitching continued to be stellar on Saturday as Troy signee Dillon Cook got the Win, working 3 innings of perfect baseball, striking out 8. Sophomore Ian Lee and Senior Landon Wissman finished off the game for the Tigers allowing just 2 hits and striking out 3 over their 2 innings of work.
JV
– Grissom 11, Austin 10
Much like the Varsity, the Grissom JV was able to get back on track with a hard-fought win over the Austin JV. A back-and-forth game saw the Tigers blow an 8-5 lead in the 6th inning, only to add 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 7th off of 3 leadoff BBs, a game-tying RBI single by Sophomore Ian Lee, and a walk-off HBP to take the 11-10 victory.
There were 4 different Tiger hitters with multiple hits, led by Sophomore Garrett Swearingen who drove in 3 RBIs on the day. Although Grissom pitchers allowed a handful of runs, Charlie Cassingham finished the day with 7 Ks in 3.1 innings of work and Trent Wagoner picked up the Win in relief with 5 Ks in his 2 innings of work.
