Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap Week of 3/1 – 3/9
Tuesday – 3/1 @ Hazel Green

In his first start of the 2022 season, Wallace State signee Rynzo Crutcher was cruising through 2 innings before the Trojan bats got hot in the 3rd inning. Crutcher suffered the loss (0-1) despite striking out 5 and only allowing 3 hits through his 3.2 innings of work.
Junior Ty Sanderson led hitters on the day with 3 hits, including a double and 2 RBI’s. Lawson State signee Christian Sutphin tacked on 2 hits himself and worked a scoreless bottom half of the 7th even though the Tigers fell short.
Thursday – 3/3 @ Westminster

After falling behind early 2-0, the bats finally woke up in the 3rd inning for the Tigers as they brought across 4 runs off of a Charlie Cassingham RBI single and an RBI double from Snead State signee Jack Carson and Junior Ty Sanderson. John Melvin University signee Trevor Broome led the team with 3 hits while Sanderson led the team with 2 RBI’s.
Junior Ty Sanderson also picked up his first Win of the season (1-1, 2.33 ERA) working 6 innings, striking out 5 and allowing only 1 Earned Run. Junior Trent Wagoner worked a perfect 7th inning striking out 1 to cap off the road victory for the Tigers.
Saturday – 3/5 vs. 7A #5 Spain Park

The Jaguars managed to scrape across 4 1st inning runs on Saturday which proved to be enough to put away the Tigers. Junior Trent Wagoner suffered the loss (1-1, 3.11 ERA) despite his 3 innings of work. Freshman Charlie Cassingham led the team with 2 hits, as senior Gage Harmon and junior Ty Sanderson picked up the only other hits on the morning for Grissom.
Saturday – 3/5 vs. Fort Payne

Grissom 5, Fort Payne 1
The Tigers were able to bounce back in the afternoon contest with the Wildcats from Fort Payne. Freshman Charlie Cassingham (0-0, 1.75 ERA) was stellar in his Varsity pitching debut as he went 4 innings allowing only 1 earned run with 8 Ks and 0 BBs in the No Decision. Junior Hayden Mai picked up his first Win of the season in relief working the final 3 innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out 5 of his own.
After back and forth scoring in the early innings, the Tigers tacked on 2 runs in both the 5th and 6th innings to cap the 5-1 victory over Fort Payne. Cassingham was the also the team leader in hits with 2 on the day, along with 1 RBI. Seniors Logan Davis, Trevor Broome, and Christian Sutphin picked up the other RBIs in the afternoon matchup for Grissom.
Monday – 3/7 @ Madison Academy
Grissom 6, Madison Academy 5
On short notice, the Tigers picked up on Monday afternoon and traveled to Madison Academy for a tough road contest against the Mustangs. After trading runs through the first 5 innings, the Tigers held on to a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th. Following an error and a couple of HBP’s by the Tigers bullpen, Madison Academy took back the lead up 5-3 needing just 3 more outs in the 7th to put away Grissom. Back-to-back singles by Lawson State signee Christian Sutphin and Junior Chris Lynam started a rally and put the Tigers back in business to open the 7th inning. Following a Mustangs’ error and multiple wild pitches, the Tigers took back the lead 6-5 heading into the bottom half of the 7th and were able to hold on to that lead to compete the comeback victory.
Wallace State signee Rynzo Crutcher (0-1, 3.81 ERA) picked up a No Decision after working 5 solid innings, allowing only 1 earned run with 7 Ks. It was the Junior Mitchell Grigsby (2-0, 0.00 ERA) who came up huge out of the bullpen and picked up the Win after working the final 1.2 innings allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, striking out 4 of the 8 batters that he faced.
Wednesday – 3/9 vs. Hazel Green

An early RBI single by Junior Chris Lynam gave the Tigers a 1st inning lead, but it was an inning-ending double play that put the Grissom rally to rest. The Trojans responded with 1 of their own in the 3rd while the Tigers bounced back with 2 more to take a 3-1 lead into the 4th inning before the game really turned around in favor of the Trojans. Hazel Green was able to take advantage of the Grissom mistakes in both the 4th and 7th innings to cap off the 10-5 loss for the Tigers despite having more hits than the Trojans.
Juniors Ty Sanderson (.394 AVG) and Chris Lynam each had 2 hits, while Senior Gage Harmon and Freshman Charlie Cassingham added a couple of huge RBI base hits of their own during the contest.
Ty Sanderson (1-1, 2.92 ERA) picked up a No Decision in his 3rd start of the season working 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with 5 Ks. Junior Trent Wagoner suffered the loss (1-2, 4.50 ERA) in relief while Junior Hayden Mai and Freshman Charlie Cassingham worked a combine 3.2 innings combining to strike out 6 in the final game that the Tigers will play prior to Spring Break.
