Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap – Week of 3/15-3/20
Tuesday – 3/16 @ Hazel Green
Varsity
– Grissom 2, Hazel Green 5
Following 3 runs in the first 2 innings for the Trojans, the Tigers could not find a way to rally back in the Tuesday night loss. Jack Carson, Tyler Sanderson, and Dillon Cook had the only hits of the day for Grissom. Wallace State signee John Allen Stogner struggled early for the first time this season but finished the day with 5 Ks through his 4 innings of work. The Trojans found a way to shut down a late rally from the Tigers and hold on for a 5-2 victory in the rematch.
JV
– Grissom 3, Hazel Green 5
Despite 6 hits spread throughout the starting 9, the Tigers JV fell short in the JV matchup at Hazel Green. Wyatt Nielson drove in the sole RBI of the day for Grissom’s JV, while Charlie Cassingham added 2 more stolen bases to his team lead. Sophomore Hayden Mai worked 3.2 innings in relief allowing only 2 hits and striking out 4 in the loss.
Friday – 3/19 vs. 7A #3 Florence
Varsity – Grissom 1, Florence 5
In a matchup between two of the top 7A programs in the state, it was a 7th inning rally from Florence that gave the Falcons the 5-1 victory. Jack Carson and Chris Lynam led the team with 2 hits apiece, but it was the Troy signee Dillon Cook who was the leader for the Tigers on the mound Friday night. Cook picked up a No Decision working 6 innings, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits with 0 BBs and 11 Ks. Cook leads all Grissom pitchers to this point with a 0.76 ERA.
JV
– Grissom 5, Florence 0
Grissom JV finally found its way back into the win column with the Friday night shutout over the Falcons. Charlie Cassingham’s 3 BBs in the leadoff spot led to 2 more stolen bases for the 8th grader. Sophomore Ian Lee was the player of the game for the Tigers as he drove in 2 RBIs at the plate and picked up the Win for his performance on the mound. Lee struck out 6 and allowed only 1 hit in 3 innings of work for the Tigers JV as Sophomore Garrett Swearingen worked the final 2 innings allowing 0 runs and striking out 3.
Saturday – 3/20 vs. Bob Jones/vs. Buckhorn
JV – Grissom 1, Bob Jones 7
Although the Tigers had more hits on the box score than the Patriots, the difference in this game proved to be the 9 errors made by Grissom defenders. Garrett Blacklock led Tigers’ hitters with 2 hits and the lone RBI of the game. Charlie Cassingham suffered the loss on the mound as he worked 3 innings, giving up only 2 hits and 1 earned run, adding 5 Ks. Trent Wagoner worked the final 2 innings in relief allowing just 1 hit and striking out 2. Of the 7 runs in the game for the Patriots, only 1 of them was scored as an earned run.
JV – Grissom 12, Buckhorn 6
The Tigers defense picked it up in the late afternoon matchup with the Bucks as they committed only 1 error and scored 12 runs off of 7 hits. Hayden Mai led the team with 3 RBIs as both Garrett Blacklock and Trent Wagoner added 2 RBIs each. Sophomore Blake Moon continued his hot streak on the hill as he worked 4 innings of 2-hit shutout baseball, striking out 6 and walking 0. Moon moves to 4-0 on the year with 42 Ks to only 4 BBs in less than 20 innings of work.
