Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap Week of 3/15 – 3/20
Tuesday – 3/15 @ Athens
Grissom 1, Athens 8
In his first start of the season, Junior Mitchell Grigsby (2-1, 0.88 ERA) suffered his first loss of the year while allowing only 1 earned run off of 2 hits in his 2 innings of work. Freshman Charlie Cassingham, Junior Trent Wagoner, and Junior Hayden Mai worked clean innings out of the bullpen allowing 0 hits and combining to strike out 4.
Thursday – 3/17 @ Lincoln County (TN)
Grissom 5, Lincoln County 4
In the opener of the PBR Stateline Showdown between teams from Alabama and Tennessee, it was the Tigers who got in the win column first. A 2nd inning RBI double by Florida State College at Jacksonville signee Logan Davis and an RBI single by Junior Chris Lynam the following inning put the Tigers ahead 3-0 through 3 innings. Following a leadoff Home Run in the 5th inning by Freshman Charlie Cassingham, Lincoln County responded with 3 of their own to cut into the Grissom lead. Following a 6th inning run by the Falcons and an empty 7th inning for both teams, the game headed into extra innings. It was a lead off Game-Winning Solo Home Run in the 8th inning by Senior Eli Kelly that gave the Tigers the victory.
Wallace State signee Rynzo Crutcher (0-1, 3.27 ERA) picked up another No Decision despite carrying a No-Hitter into the 4th inning. Crutcher allowed only 1 hit on the day, striking out 6. Junior Trent Wagoner (2-2, 3.41 ERA) picked up his second Win of the season working 2 No-Hit innings of his own, striking out 3.
Thursday – 3/17 vs. Riverdale (TN)
Grissom 3, Riverdale 9
It was a 5-run 3rd inning that proved to be the difference in the night cap against Riverdale. Grissom hitters managed to scrape across just 4 hits, with Junior Ty Sanderson, Senior Christian Sutphin, and Junior Trent Wagoner picking up the only RBIs in the game for the Tigers.
The Lawson State signee Christian Sutphin suffered his second loss of the season, despite only allowing 1 hit through his 2 innings of work. Senior Gage Harmon carried most of the weight on the mound for the remainder of the game as he worked 4 innings, striking out 3 followed by a perfect 7th inning by Junior Wyatt Nielsen.
Friday – 3/18 vs. Trinity Christian Academy (TN)
Grissom 10, Trinity Christian 8
Friday’s matchup with Trinity Christian Academy was a very different one compared the the Riverdale loss. The Tigers scored first off of an RBI double by Junior Chris Lynam in the 1st. They continued the scoring in the 3rd inning with some big hits in the middle of the order, including the 2nd Home Run in as many days for the Senior Eli Kelly (.333 AVG / 2 HR/ 7 RBI). Despite a push by Trinity Christian in the middle innings, the Tigers were able to hold on for the 10-8 victory.
Lawson State signee Christian Sutphin led all hitters with his 3 hit day, along with 2 more RBIs. Three more Tigers drove in 2 RBI a piece while Kelly led the team with 3 RBIs in the game. Junior Ty Sanderson (1-1, 4.20 ERA) picked up a No Decision after 3 innings of work, striking out 3. Freshman Charlie Cassingham (1-0, 4.20 ERA) picked up the first Win of his Varsity career as he worked the final 4 innings, striking out 3 of his own.
Saturday – 3/19 vs. Knoxville Catholic (TN)
Grissom 5, Knoxville Catholic 2
The Tigers were once again able to score first in the finale of the PBR Stateline Showdown as they brought across 2 runs in the 1st inning off of another double from Lawson State signee Christian Sutphin (.395 AVG / 12 RBI). After the Irish from Knoxville Catholic responded with 1 of their own in both the 1st and 2nd innings, it was not until the 6th inning that Grissom was able to pull away and complete the 5-2 victory to finish the showdown with a 3-1 record.
Freshman Charlie Cassingham (.314 AVG) led the team with 3 hits out of the leadoff spot while Junior Ty Sanderson continued his hot streak at the plate with 2 hits of his own. Junior Trent Wagoner (2-2, 3.65 ERA) picked up the No Decision working 3 solid innings, allowing only 2 runs and striking out 3. It was the Senior Mitchell Grigsby (3-1, 0.58 ERA) who picked up yet another win in relief for the Tigers working the final 4 innings in No-Hit fashion to put away the Irish.
