Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap – Week of 3/22-3/27
Monday – 3/22 vs. 6A #6 Hartselle
Varsity
– Grissom 3, Hartselle 4
After pitchers on both sides worked through the first 4 innings scoreless, it was Grissom who brought across 3 runs in the 5th to take a 3-0 lead over the Hartselle Tigers. However, it was Hartselle who got the last laugh as they brought across 4 runs in the top half of the 7th to complete the 4-3 comeback over Grissom.
The Wallace State signee John Allen Stogner had yet another impressive start on the mound until running across trouble in the 7th. Although he took the loss in the back-and-forth contest, he still finished the day with 8 Ks and only 1 BB. Will Varmette (Wallace State) and Junior Rynzo Crutcher worked out of a jam in the 7th allowing just 1 hit and striking out 1.
JV
– Grissom 2, Hartselle 20
After dominant pitching from both sides in the Varsity contest, the JV game was almost the exact opposite. Grissom JV pitchers allowed 11 runs in the 1st, and 6 more in the 2nd as the Hartselle JV brought across 20 runs on the day, off of 12 hits. Although Grissom JV pitchers failed to keep their team in the game, Sophomore Ian Lee was solid at the plate as he had 3 of the Tigers’ 7 hits.
Saturday – 3/27 vs. Spain Park
Varsity – Grissom 6, Spain Park 5
Following a 1st inning RBI single from Junior Christian Sutphin, the Tigers were held scoreless until the 6th. Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom half of the 6th inning, the Tigers erupted for 4 more runs to take a 5-3 lead into the 7th. Following a double and HBP for Spain Park, a 2 RBI single tied the game up at 5. Nevertheless, the Tigers were able to scrap together a leadoff single, followed by a walk and then a masterful bunt by Senior Brandon Summers that loaded the bases for Christian Sutphin who was able to walk the game off with an RBI single to give the Tigers the 6-5 win.
Christian Sutphin and Junior Trevor Broome led the team with 2 RBIs each, as the team combined for 6 runs on 9 hits. Pitching was led by Troy signee Dillon Cook who worked 4 innings, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 6. Uncommitted leftie Evan Steckmesser worked 2 innings in relief, striking out 3. Wallace State signee John Allen Stogner picked up the Win as he worked out of a jam in the top half of the 7th, striking out 1.
Saturday
– 3/27 vs. 6A #3 Helena
Varsity – Grissom 3, Helena 12
After runs by each team in the 1st, the Huskies brought across 4 runs in the 2nd to take an early 5-1 lead. After more runs from each side throughout the contest, the Tigers were able cut the Helena lead to 6-3 entering the 6th. Helena then capitalized on an error, 3 BBs, a triple, and a Home Run to defeat the Tigers 12-3.
Wallace State signee Will Varmette suffered only his second loss of the season, working only 2 innings allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Junior Rynzo Crutcher and Senior Landon Wissman were solid out of the bullpen, working 3 innings allowing 0 hits and striking out 4. Sophomore Chris Lynam led Grissom hitters with 2 hits, while Snead State signee Noah Lam drove in 2 of the Tigers’ runs.
Saturday – 3/27 vs. Huntsville
JV – Grissom 11, Huntsville 7
In a rivalry matchup between the Tigers and Panthers JV, we saw a back-and-forth contest which included 18 total runs and hits combined. After trailing 4-3 entering the bottom half of the 3rd inning, the Tigers brought across 7 more runs over the next two innings and despite a 7th inning rally, Grissom JV was able to hold on to the 11-7 victory.
Hitters were led by Blake Moon, Cam Hearn, and Chuck Heath who had a monster 2 RBI double in the 3rd which broke the game open. 8th Grader Charlie Cassingham added on to his team lead in Stolen Bases as he picked up his 30th of the 2021 JV season. Pitching was dominated by Sophomore Ian Lee, who picked up his 3rd Win of the season (3-0, 2.25 ERA) and Sophomore Blake Moon who got out of a jam with a strikeout and a double play to close the book on the Huntsville Panthers.
