Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap – Week of 4/12-4/17
Tuesday – 4/13 @ Albertville
Varsity – Grissom 17, Albertville 4 (Final/6)
Although the first 2 innings were scoreless from both sides, the Tigers got on the board first and scored at least 1 run in every inning after the 2nd. Grissom took advantage of 14 hits and 5 Aggies’ errors to bring across 17 runs in the victory. Wallace State signee John Allen Stogner (5-5, 3.72 ERA) picked up the Win working 5 innings, allowing 4 Earned Runs on 6 hits, with 4 Ks. Junior Rynzo Crutcher shut the door in the 6th striking out 2 of the 3 batters that he faced.
Grissom hitters scraped together 14 hits on the day, including 5 different players with a multi-hit day. Martin Methodist signee Cannon Raby led hitters with 3 hits and 4 RBIs on the afternoon. Sophomore Chris Lynam and Troy signee Dillon Cook also drove in 3 RBIs each as the Tigers brought across 17 runs in the Area contest.
Tuesday – 4/13 JV Tourney
JV – Grissom 0, Madison Academy 1
The Tigers JV opened up tournament play with a back-and-forth pitchers’ contest, which saw the Mustangs win on a walk off error in the bottom half of the 6th inning. Grissom hitters put together only 4 hits on the day, 2 coming off of the bat of Sophomore Wyatt Nielson. Junior Josh Hammonds suffered the loss, although he worked a solid 5 innings, walking only 1 and striking out 6 for the Tigers.
JV – Grissom 6, James Clemens 1
The Grissom JV was able to bounce back in the second game of pool play as they scraped together 6 runs in the final 2 innings to complete the 6-1 win over the Jets JV. Sophomores David Hughes and Chuck Heath combined for 3 of the 5 Tigers’ hits and 5 of the 6 RBIs in the game. The difference in the game was the stellar outing from Sophomore Trent Wagoner. Wagoner picked up the Win in a Complete Game, 1-hitter in which he struck out 7. The Tigers JV will play one more pool play game on Monday afternoon before being seeded for tournament play.
Thursday – 4/15 vs. Albertville
Varsity – Grissom 10, Albertville 1
Unlike Tuesday’s matchup, the Tigers wasted no time getting on the board in Game 2 of the series as they brought across 2 runs in the 1st, which proved to be all that was needed in the game. Troy signee Dillon Cook and Snead State signee Noah Lam put together 3 hits apiece as the Tigers had 10 runs and 10 hits on the day, while once again taking advantage of the 7 Albertville errors.
Snead State commit Evan Steckmesser (3-1, 3.00 ERA) picked up the Win on the mound as he worked 6 innings, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits with 7 Ks. Junior Rynzo Crutcher (1-0, 2.40 ERA) once again shut down the Aggies on the back end as he worked a scoreless 7th inning with 1 K and 0 BBs.
Varsity – Grissom 7, Albertville 1
The Tigers were able to complete the 3-game sweep of the Aggies as they carried a shutout into the 7th inning before Albertville scored their first run. Grissom scored 7 runs in the game off of 9 hits and 4 more Albertville errors. Cannon Raby and Noah Lam had 2 hits each, while Lam and Sophomore Tyler Sanderson each had 2 RBIs as well.
Wallace State signee Will Varmette (4-2, 3.87 ERA) picked up the Win as he worked 5 shutout innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 9. Dillon Cook (4-2, 1.77 ERA) worked the final 2 innings without allowing a hit, striking out 6. With the victory, Grissom now controls their own destiny for the Area as they look to clinch a playoff spot and win the Area this next week as they take on the rival Panthers.
