Grissom Baseball Weekly Recap Week of 4/15 – 4/23
Friday – 4/15 vs. Albertville (Game 1)
Grissom 2, Albertville 3
In a game in which the Aggies brought across 3 unearned runs, that proved to be the difference as the Tigers dropped the first game of the series. Grissom scraped together only 4 hits on the day to the 3 from Albertville with Junior Ty Sanderson driving in the only RBI in the game for the home team.
Wallace State signee Rynzo Crutcher (1-2, 2.38 ERA) suffered the loss despite pitching a complete game, allowing 0 earned runs on 3 hits, and striking out a season-high 13.
Saturday – 4/16 @ Albertville (Game 2)
Grissom 6, Albertville 2
The Tigers finally got the bats and defense back in the right direction in Game 2 as they scored 6 runs on 11 hits with 0 errors. Four different Grissom starters had multiple hits on the day with Junior Ian Lee driving in 3 RBIs, 2 coming off a clutch 7th inning triple to provide some insurance for the Tigers.
Junior Ty Sanderson (2-2, 2.74 ERA) picked up the No Decision allowing only 1 earned run in 4 innings of work. Junior Ian Lee (1-0, O.54 ERA) picked up the Win working the final 3 innings with 4 Ks.
Saturday – 4/16 @ Albertville (Game 3)
Grissom 3, Albertville 6
After scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning, the Tigers failed to bring anything else across in the series finale as they fell 6-3 to the Aggies in the tiebreaker matchup. Freshman Charlie Cassingham and Senior Gage Harmon led the team with 2 hits each. Cassingham (2-2, 4.20 ERA) did however suffer the Loss on the mound allowing 3 earned runs in 3.1 innings of work, striking out 5.
Tuesday – 4/19 vs. Boaz
Grissom 6, Boaz 2
In the mid-week matchup with a strong Boaz team, it was the Tigers who jumped out early and never looked back. With 5 runs in the 1st, Grissom never looked back as they picked up the victory.
Senior Gage Harmon and Snead State signee Jack Carson led the team with 2 hits apiece. Harmon and Junior Chris Lynam each drove in 2 RBIs in the win. Florida State College at Jacksonville signee Logan Davis picked up his 1st Win of the season working 2 innings out of the bullpen, striking out 4 of the 10 batters that he faced.
Thursday – 4/21 @ Huntsville (Game 1)
Grissom 2, Huntsville 5
In a must-win game for the Tigers in order to reach the playoffs for a second consecutive season, Grissom fell short despite a late-game comeback attempt with the tying run coming to the plate. The Tigers put together only 4 hits on the day, 2 coming off the bat of Junior Ty Sanderson, who also drove in the only 2 RBIs on the day.
Wallace State signee Rynzo Crutcher (1-3, 2.97 ERA) suffered the loss in his final start in a Tiger uniform after working 3 innings, allowing 4 runs on only 3 hits and 3 Ks. Junior Ian Lee (1-0, 0.44 ERA) was once again shutdown on the back end as he pitched the final 3 innings in hitless fashion.
Saturday – 4/23 vs. Huntsville (Game 2)
Grissom 5, Huntsville 15
Game 2 featured more hitting from both sides, but it was the Panthers who capitalized on the Tiger errors to take the series from Grissom. The Senior group of Gage Harmon, Eli Kelly, and Logan Davis put together 2 hits each in the loss. Junior Ty Sanderson (2-3, 3.33 ERA) suffered the loss on the mound allowing 4 runs in 3 innings of work as the Tigers dropped the final Area game of the 2022 season.
Saturday – 4/23 vs. Huntsville (Game 3)
Grissom 9, Huntsville 3
Despite losing the series, the Tigers were able to at least end the season in the Win column as they put together 9 runs on 6 hits in the season finale. Lawson State signee Christian Sutphin led the team with his 3-4 day, driving in 2 RBIs.
Freshman Charlie Cassingham (3-2, 4.09 ERA) picked up the Win allowing only 2 runs on 3 hits and striking out 6 in 4 innings of work. Junior Ian Lee (1-0, 0.37 ERA) also finished the season on a high note picking up his 3rd save in as many opportunities as he threw the final 3 innings striking out 3.
